![]() ![]() ![]() One great thing about my all-wool setup is it DOESN'T SMELL even if you sweat. In short: I basically add as many merino layers as I want until I feel comfortable staying outside in freezing weather for hours. Everything is inside the waders except the wading jacket, so rain doesn't run down the inside. I pair that with a merino neck gaiter, the Sitka Hudson hat (Gore-tex), Pantanal gloves (also Gore-tex) and 5mm neoprene waders with one or two merino long johns and wool socks. My upper body layering for most stationary cold/wet hunts is as follows: You should be able to use a thin liner for extra warmth. To be honest I will probably ditch the Pantanals when I find good waterproof "lobster" type mitts. I would prefer i they were a mitt with a free trigger finger. I, too have an issue with cold hands and have found the Pantanal gloves to be pretty good. It's also packed with other nice features. It can be pissing rain and it will not get through. The Delta Wading jacket is simply an amazing product. It’s awesome stuff, looks badass, and is hands down the best layering system money can buy - but there are absolutely more affordable options that can work really well. Either save for it or find something more affordable. Last note - Please don’t be the guy that puts this kinda shit on a credit card. To be quite honest, the fit is what sold me, and I spent more than I care to admit to have well fitted, super comfortable hunting gear. I’ve used Drake, Banded, Redhead, etc and they all have great options that can probably do what SITKA does. This is by far the best wind protection I’ve ever had.Īnyway. Very seldom is it just cold, it’s the wind that usually eats you alive. I mostly hunt in north and west Texas with the occasional trip to south Texas, Louisiana, and Colorado. I forget what the word they use for the material is. That said, the wader jacket, layout pants, waders, and duck oven all work pretty well as stand alone pieces. One piece isn’t going to be this magical unicorn that solves your freezing balls problem. It takes some commitment because for it to really work well, you’ve got to buy several pieces to layer. You’re going to get what you pay for, but you don’t have to spend $2,000 on gear to do well. I wear them more and more since getting into crane and geese, and I wouldn’t trade them for the world. I have the Dakota and Boreal, they are both awesome.įor you goose hunters, I have the layout pants and they are the cats meow.
